Background

Over the past decade the demand for ICT skills has grown exponentially which has brought rise for the need of innovative and disruptive business models to which corporate giants just aren’t able to respond quick enough to cease the technology led opportunities.

As the world races into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), digital skills shortages have become a major challenge. Around the world, and in South Africa in particular, a shortage of high-level ICT skills is threatening to derail Fourth Industrial Revolution progress.

The country needs experts in data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, advanced cyber security, cyber forensics and more, to help both public and private sector to capitalise on opportunities and remain competitive in a new digital world.

In addition, South Africa is challenged by the need to create millions of jobs and fast track the growth of small and mid-sized businesses, but a widespread lack of digital literacy hampers progress in these areas.

Reflecting on the biggest challenges and opportunities for the SA ICT sector in 2020, Board members of the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA) point to skills shortages as the single biggest challenge facing the sector in the next ten years.

According to the World Economic Forum, the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolutions (4IR) could create up to 160 million new jobs. South Africa has witnessed Microsoft building cloud data centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and Amazon establishing its presence in country, which presents new opportunities for our young people to contribute and find employment.
